We are in the process of improving our connections to the Internet backbone, as well as our connections around Southern Utah. Improvements are planned in our St. George and Cedar City wireless networks, and we’re expanding our regional connections again.
Here are a few projects we have underway (updates as they come):
- Upgraded connection to Broadwing (via Interlinx redundant fiber) to 100 megabit/sec (complete)
- Upgraded connection to Qwest backbone to 45 megabit/sec (complete)
These two projects will nearly double our connection speed to the Internet backbone while preserving redundancy.
Wireless network upgrades
- Wireless network backhaul in St. George - 45 megabit DS3 from 22 megabit ATM (in process)
- Cedar City network bandwidth - 12 to 22 megabit, moving to Qwest fiber optics (in process)
- Added a secondary wireless uplink in Cedar City (complete)
- Upgraded to a more powerful router for the St. George wireless network (7204VXR) (complete)
Broadband for Business Buildings
- Installed high speed business network connections (up to 8 megabit/sec) at the new Morningside Professional Plaza and Blackridge Terrace buildings. (complete)
- Upgraded our St. George Utah Interlinx connection to be fully redundant on the St. George fiber “loop.” Our Interlinx customers will now stay connected in case of a fiber cut in the loop. (complete)
Internal Upgrades
- Added redundant, fault tolerant core and border routers in St. George (complete)
- Upgrading to a more powerful router (Cisco 7204VXR) for Cedar City (in process)
- Peering connection with a Salt Lake based ISP (in process)
- Building a peering network for local ISP’s and public entities (in process)
What does this all mean for you? InfoWest has better Internet connections to bring you the Internet faster, more reliably and in more areas than before. We will be able to support the ever-expanding needs of our customers well into the future, and offer services we’ve never been able to before. For example, in Cedar City, we’ll soon be announcing new options for business high speed connections. We’ll be making improvements in our wireless network capacity as well.
What’s next?
We’re busy working on some great new services and products that will take advantage of our improved network. We try not to make any announcements on new services before we have something to show, but rest assured we’re busy at work.
What would you like to see next? Comment below.

“Broadwing, backbone, backhaul, bandwidth”–We are Soooooo glad you guys speak this language and are doing what you do. We don’t have to know–we just see the great results! Keep up the good (though mysterious to us) work.

So far, everything seems to be happening for St George and Cedar City. I keep wondering when the area up through to Enterprise and along Hwy 18 will be getting any kind of upgrade. My system is as slow as a turtle. We are still working in the dark ages. Qwest keeps promising we will be getting DSL lines this year, that’s been three years ago.

P.S. At one time, we used to be on someone’s map but I’m wondering if the world has passed us by.

Hi, I agree with Bud Alderman–our system is slower than a snail; which is much slower than his turtle. I’d sure like to be able to get DSL and I don’t know why we can’t get it in our area. We are located about two miles from the St. George hospital. It can’t be that difficult! I’m getting awfully frustrated.
